Anna Chowaniec, PhD

In 2015 she graduated from Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Warsaw, where she defended her master’s thesis: “Down Syndrome. Mothers’ Experience and Negotiations with Modernity”, supervised by dr Magdalena Rwadkowska-Walkowicz. The thesis received an Jan Józef Lipski Award (Open Republic Association). Since 2016 she is a PhD student at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology at the University of Warsaw, in the Department of Anthropology of Medicine. She was an assistant researcher in two projects funded by the Polish National Science Center (OPUS panel): "Family and reproduction in the context of genetic development and new medical technologies. The anthropological perspsective." (2011-2014, principal investigator dr Magdalena Radkowska-Walkowicz) and "Socio-cultural dimensions of rare diseases on the example of LCHAD deficiency. Comparative study of Poland and Finland" (2016-2019, principal investigator dr Małgorzata Rajtar). From 2019 she is a principal investigator of her own project Rare metabolic disorders – anthropological perspective, financed by NCN. She is also a researcher in the project„Healthcare as a Public Space: Social Integration and Social Diversity in the Context of Access to Healthcare in Europe” (Humanities in the European Research Area, Joint Research Programme “Public Spaces: Culture and Integration in Europe” 2019-22, project leader prof. Floriana Steger, Ulm University). In 2016 participated in the Association for Legal Intervention project “They are coming! How will we greet them?” She is also a member of the European Association of Social Anthropologists and Polish Transhumanist Association. Her research interests include medical anthropology, especially rare and genetic diseases, as well as studies on disability. In her doctoral thesis she plans to analyze the situation of people with rare metabolic diseases (LCHADD and phenylketonuria) and their families, with special attention paid to the dimensions of disability and the role of diet in family relationships.
