Baris Kamyab Muhammedrezai, MA

PhD student at the GSSR

I finished medical school in 2021 and worked for a brief time as a General Practitioner in Istanbul. I also had the chance to work in a closed penitentiary in Istanbul for some time where I was tasked with taking care of patients with different types of psychiatric diseases.

In 2022 I started working on my PhD project titled “The body, the mind and the making of modern Turks. A social science study of mental health approaches in post-1923 Turkey”. This project aims to study policy changes towards mental health in post First World War Turkey. I plan to analyze how approaches of policymakers and medical experts towards mental health in Turkey have changed over the years. I also want to delve into what socio-cultural concepts shaped mental health policies in Turkey, in order to provide policy recommendations that are more culturally-specific.

My main interests revolve around psychiatry (specifically on transcultural psychiatry), sociology and anthropology of medicine, psychology and cognitive neuroscience.
